Windows 10 has a new feature called Wi-Fi Sense that makes sharing your Wi-Fi password slightly more convenient — at the expense of network security, naturally. Wi-Fi Sense automatically shares password information with your contacts, in theory so your friends and family will be able to connect to your network without having to manually enter in a password.
Your friends won’t actually know your exact password it’s encrypted and then stored in the cloud , but assuming you don’t necessarily want every contact you have in Outlook, Skype and Facebook to be able to connect to your home network when they’re in range of it, this is not an ideal setup. So the first thing you’ll want to do is turn this off. Here, you can also turn off the ability to automatically connect to open hotspots and to connect to networks shared by your contacts.
But turning off Wi-Fi sense on your computer is only one small part of the equation. Because anyone else who connects to your Wi-Fi network with their Windows 10 laptop or phone is putting your network’s security at risk if they haven’t turned off Wi-Fi Sense on their device.
So the next thing you’ll need to do is to make your network unshareable. Your guide to a better future. Tech Computing. Sarah Jacobsson Purewal. Sarah Jacobsson Purewal Freelance Writer.

With the launch of Windows 10, anyone who walks into your house and ooff your Wi-Fi password for their PC could potentially let all their friends onto your shraing, thanks to a new feature that has ignited controversy online.
Called Wi-Fi Sense, the feature is designed to make it easier for people to get Internet access for their devices while they’re on the go by automatically logging them into wireless hotspots. It ftee so with a transmit panic 4 download approach: by logging users into select open networks frree also by allowing them to share secured connections with their friends and vice versa.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, that has drawn the ire of people who care about wireless security. If someone with a Windows 10 device logs on to a new network, they can check a box to share that access with their contacts, who could include their Facebook friends, Outlook.
This isn’t exactly a new feature — Microsoft introduced it with Windows Phone 8. Craig Mathias, a principal at the Farpoint Group who specializes in wireless technology, said in an email that the feature was “a cheap hack. To hear Microsoft pitch Wi-Fi Sense, it’s a security feature, not a flaw.
Using the new technology, people can let their friends access their home network without having to provide them with the password, which cuts down paseword those annoying conversations that take place when someone is trying to get Internet access. What’s more, contacts who are able to log into a network only using Wi-Fi Sense don’t actually see the password.
According to an FAQ about the featurea user who shares network access sends the password through an encrypted connection to a Microsoft server, where it’s stored in an sharingg form before being handed off securely to any of their friends rfee needs it based on location data from their device. Microsoft says that someone who gets access through Wi-Fi Sense will only have access to the Internet and по этому адресу be able to get to any other computers or other devices on the network.
Of course, all that relies on the feature working as intended. While it’s not clear exactly how Microsoft is storing passwords on a client device, it’s possible that someone sufficiently motivated would be able to find and extract the wireless password for a network they get access to thanks to their friends. An sharong could also friend people on Facebook in order to get access to networks using Wi-Fi Sense. All of this relies on 110 Microsoft database storing wireless network information remaining secure, to boot.

Wi-Fi Sense doesn’t exist in Windows 10 v and later. So, if your computer is fully updated, you can’t use it. Wi-Fi Sense lets you silently share Wi-Fi passwords with your friends. Previously a Windows Phone-only feature, Wi-Fi Sense uploads your passwords to a Microsoft server and then distributes them to your friends.
The next time they come within range of that network, their devices connect automatically. Select the Start button and then choose Settings.
Choose Wi-Fi. Click Manage Wi-Fi settings. Now you’re on the Wi-Fi Sense screen. At the top are two slider buttons that you can turn on or off. The first one labeled Connect to suggested open hotspots allows you to connect automatically to public Wi-Fi hotspots. These hotspots come from a crowd-sourced database managed by Microsoft. That’s a helpful feature if you travel a lot, but it’s not related to the feature that lets you share login authentication with friends.
The second slider labeled Connect to networks shared by my contacts is what allows you to share with friends. After you turn that on, you can choose from three networks of friends to share with including your Outlook. You can choose all three or just one or two of them.
Before you can receive any shared Wi-Fi networks from your friends, you first have to share a Wi-Fi network with them. Wi-Fi Sense is not an automated service: It is opt-in in the sense that you have to elect to share a Wi-Fi network with your friends. The Wi-Fi network passwords your PC knows will not be automatically shared with others. You can only share Wi-Fi passwords using consumer-grade technology — any corporate WI-Fi networks with extra authentication cannot be shared.
After you do share a network login, however, any networks shared by your friends will be available to you. Alternatively, Under Wi-Fi select Manage known networks. Select any of your networks listed here with a Not shared tag and you’ll see a Share button.
Enter the network password for that Wi-Fi access point to confirm you know it. When that step is done, you’ll have shared your first network and are now able to receive shared networks from others. So far we’ve said you’re sharing your Wi-Fi password with others. That was mostly for the sake of clarity and simplicity. More precisely, your password is uploaded to a Microsoft server over an encrypted connection.
It is then stored by Microsoft in an encrypted form and sent to your friends back over an encrypted connection. That password is then used in the background on your friends’ PCs to connect to the shared network. Unless you have friends who have some serious hacking chops, they will never see the actual password.
In some ways, Wi-Fi Sense is more secure than passing around a piece of paper to house guests since they never get to see or write down your password. However, to be of any use, your guests first have to be using Windows 10 and already sharing Wi-Fi networks through Wi-Fi Sense themselves. If they’re not, Wi-Fi Sense will not help you. That said, don’t think that you’ll be able to just turn on this feature and start using it on the spur of the moment.
Microsoft says it takes a few days before your contacts will see shared networks on their PC. If you want to coordinate some Wi-Fi Sense sharing make sure you do it ahead of time. Wi-Fi Sense sharing only works if you know the password. Any networks you share with your friends via Wi-Fi Sense cannot be passed on to others. Wi-Fi Sense requires some very specific actions before it will be of any use, but if you have a group of friends that need to share network passwords Wi-Fi Sense can be a helpful tool — as long as you don’t mind letting Microsoft manage your Wi-Fi passwords.

A controversial part of the Wi-Fi Sense feature will be jettisoned in an upcoming version of Windows. Lance Whitney is a freelance technology writer and trainer and a former IT professional. He’s the author of two tech books–one on Windows and another on LinkedIn. Microsoft is dumping a touchy Windows 10 option that lets you share your Wi-Fi passwords with contacts.
The option is part of a feature called Wi-Fi Sense , aimed at making it easy to share your Wi-Fi network with family, friends, visitors and other people within range. The goal was to eliminate the hassle of manually doling out your Wi-Fi password to those whom you want to grant access. But the password-sharing option aroused concerns, especially at first, from people who thought it automatically shared your network with anyone who wanted access.
Wi-Fi Sense actually offers controls so you can choose which networks to share and which contacts can tap into your Wi-Fi. Your contacts gain access to your network but your password remains unknown to them.
Still, in the latest preview edition of Windows, Microsoft has decided to remove the Wi-Fi password-sharing option, which wasn’t used enough to justify the cost of maintenance. But it will keep the Wi-Fi Sense feature that lets you connect to open networks.
